"All pupils should be given fish oil, say experts" ...
Daily Mail ::  March 2007

Is this really anything new?

Attention all those from the baby boomer generation!

Did your mother give you cod liver oil when you were a child?  Ours certainly did.  It tasted disgusting, but we took it - straight off a spoon!  We had to!  We were tough - or at least obedient ...   None of the nice orange flavoured stuff for us.

Whatever happened with the baby boomer generation?  Why did it discard the innate wisdom that prevailed during childhood?

Usual answer:  "It doesn't taste good".

So we forgot!  And the next generation suffered.

"All pupils should be given fish oil, say experts" ... By Sean Poulter

"HEALTH experts want compulsory fish oil supplements for all schoolchildren to improve their intelligence and behaviour.

They are also advising pregnant women to ignore official warning about eating oily fish.

British and U.S. experts told a Parliamentary inquiry yesterday the nation needs to massively increase its consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids found in oily fish.

They said the change is vital to improve the health and intelligence of today's children and future generations.  Fish oil supplements could also be effective in treating depression and improving mental health.

Dr. Alex Richardson of Oxford University told the first hearing of the Inquiry on Diet and Behaviour, organised by the Parliamentary Forum on Food and health, that the Government should start providing Omega-3 supplements in schools.  She said a trial in Durham had shown they can reduce disruptive behaviour and improve learning.

U.S. Professor Joseph Hibbeln criticised the Food Standards Agency advice that pregnant women eat no more than two portions of oily fish a week because of possible mercury contamination.  He said this would deprive developing babies of key nutrients."
